Exposure to UV radiation is the leading risk factor for skin cancer. The Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization’s International Agency of Research on Cancer both have said ultraviolet or UV radiation from the sun and artificial light sources such as tanning beds and sun lamps are carcinogenic. Spray tans are considered a safe alternative to ultraviolet exposure from the sun and indoor tanning booths.

Spray tanning is the easiest and safest way to get a healthy, dark, and sexy California tan. With absolutely no sun required, it is by far the safest alternative to acquire a beautiful glow. It is recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation and the American Medical Association.

A fine mist of a solution is applied to the skin using an airbrush. The active ingredient in the spray tanning solution is called Dihydroxyacetone [DHA]. DHA was approved by the FDA in the 1970’s and was added to the list of approved cosmetic ingredients. It is found in numerous make-ups and lotions. DHA does not damage the skin, and is considered a safe skin coloring agent and nutritional supplement. There is no known toxicity and allergic reactions are very rare.

The owner of Gotham Tan speaks about how her experience with skin cancer caused her to look for a safer alternative to achieve the natural-looking golden tanned skin she craved. As the awareness of the effects of sun damage has grown people have started looking for safer alternatives, and as they have gotten closer to sunless tanning the industry has refined the products and the results are now much better than they were in the past.
