Project Beauty E-Newsletter March 2012
If you flunked physics, eked out a “C” in chemistry and thought you were done with science when you left high school, think again. A little science is de rigueur if you wish to maintain an even-toned, plumped complexion. For starters, meet your new friends: laser energy, radiofrequency and ultrasound. All three create a controlled injury to the skin. Ouch! Who wants an injury? You do and here’s why: the controlled injury causes a healing response that spurs collagen formation and cell regeneration, plumping the skin. This Project Beauty Newsletter focuses on laser and light based cosmetic procedures. You will find a link to a Project Beauty video that covers one woman’s first hand experience laser hair removal, and a link to a Project Beauty blog regarding an initiative to develop a concisely-defined common vocabulary to help deliver information about new products to the public.

Aging, sun exposure, heredity and lifestyle factors including nutrition, alcohol consumption and smoking all may contribute to facial wrinkling. Pigmentary changes of the skin, such as blotchiness or brown spots, may also occur with age or as a result of birth control pills, pregnancy or genetic factors. Prior acne may have made the surface of your skin uneven. These problems, as well as certain other skin conditions, may be improved by skin resurfacing (including chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser resurfacing). In this Beautiful Choice Newsletter there is a link to a video on Project Beauty about the benefits of facials performed by trained skin care specialists, as well as two different blogs about skin resurfacing. Also, there are some Q&As on this topic that regularly appear in the Ask-A-Surgeon feature of the ASAPS website.
