Plastic Surgery Tourism

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Americans spent nearly 10.7 billion dollars on cosmetic procedures last year in this country, most of which was spent on surgical procedures like breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery and tummy tucks.

Surgical cosmetic procedures, when performed by licensed, board certified plastic surgeons cost thousands of dollars. Many who cannot afford the high price, turn to back alley offices with unqualified personnel – a dangerous and highly unadvised practice. And yet others turn to plastic surgery tourism. Individuals travel to upscale, modern facilities in countries such as South Africa, Brazil and Thailand to have their surgeries at a fraction of the cost.

This practice has become increasingly popular in harder economic times.

Although the price is cheaper, many wonder, is it worth it? Experts say no. Even if the doctor is qualified and the surgery goes well, traveling back to the US and getting follow up care is a concern. If a complication arises during the healing process, being in a foreign country or thousands of miles away from your surgeon poses a major health risk.

There are no statistics available regarding plastic surgeries performed outside the US, but the Huffington Post reports that there have been many cases reported of complications and even death. While there are many qualified surgeons around the world, ASAPS urges you to do your research and make sure your plastic surgeon is licensed, qualified and has appropriate follow up care for you once you’re back home.
