SCIENCE OR SCI-FI: Fetch Me My Time Machine

Since we’re all in a Sci-Fi mood from our post last week… let’s call it a trend and stick with it. And just where will today’s futuristic adventures take us? Why Time Travel, of course! A recent article in Women’s Day magazine takes a look at some of today’s top secrets for turning back the hands of time, aptly called “Turn Back the Clock” – and guess what? They use models who are over 25 (*gasp) and don’t airbrush the crap out of them (*swoon) to illustrate their cause. Kudo’s Women’s Day! You sure know how to make a woman’s day.

First, let’s start with a brush-up of what should be every single one of our daily routines, regardless of age: Gently cleanse morning and night, apply eye cream, moisturize with SPF, slap on some night cream. Do this and your canvas is a prime landing station for some of the more “advanced” time reversal potions and procedures.

Now that we’ve got that out of way, let’s take a look at those years where you’ll probably start to notice a few subtle lines around your pout, across your forehead and along the sides of your eyes – otherwise known as your 30’s/40’s. (*sob) Calm down, before you vow to never smile or make a facial gesture again, why not try a little microdermabration? With the consistency of a good facial scrub, even an at home microdermabration kit can do wonders for brightening, buffing and sloughing off those pesky dead skin cells. Of course, you can always call your trusty doctor for an in-office microderm treatment too – you know, if you can’t be trusted to not scrub like your wielding a sandblaster (like me.)

Any one of these treatments done before bed can help skin cells naturally renew themselves overnight… so you wake up looking better than you did 7 hours earlier when you went to bed. Voila! Time travel!

Like all futuristic technologies, with time the effects get less and less impressive (Remember when access to the internet was cause to ooh and aah?) so when the magic of microdermabration starts to pale it might be time to call in something stronger – like a good peel.

Peels are perfectly poised to take over where microdermabration leaves off by battling deeper-set wrinkles, exfoliate and slough off dead skin. Again, this can be a DYI situation, as there are plenty of at-home chemical peels on the market – but do review our buyer-beware blog post (here and here) to ensure that you’re terrified enough to do the research (and possibly talk to your doctor first) so as not to do more damage than good to your trusty dermis. (Seriously, folks. No wrinkle deserves that.)

Peels generally come in light, medium and strong and consist of active ingredients like glycolic acid and salicylic acid, which enhances collagen production, both plumping skin and shrinking pores. Sure you’re skin may peel for a week or so afterwards, but the results can be there own pay-off - A smoother and more radiant complexion. Just like you stepped-back in time. Again… do be careful and also be aware that peels will leave you skin super-sun-sensitive for up to 48 hours, so cover up with a high powered SPF or a helmet before you face the rays.

And they say time-travel is impossible. Nonsense! Fetch me my time machine!
