WHERE’S MY TIME MACHINE! The 70’s Discos It’s Way To A Come Back.
Dec 16, 2010 Posted by Corrie Shenigo

Am I the only one ridiculously excited by the fact that a very serious segments of 2011 Pre-Fall collections revealed in fits and waves this week pay a very serious homage to the 1970’s? Come on, people – Ali McGraw in ‘Love Story’ – while a bit ahead of my time – was clearly a fashion icon worthy of continued emulation… am I right? Bianca Jagger managed to woo Mick Jagger, Studio 54, Andy Warhol and a hoard of fashion-followers with her sexy jet-setting-style and continues to elegantly pull off many of the same looks to this day – if that’s not a fashion icon, I don’t know what is. (And I totally do… so just trust me, people.) I mean, heck, even Marc Jacobs jumped the 70’s tribute gun with the recent (and late according to the fashion world) unleashing of his 2011 Spring campaign.
Am I right or am I right? Sherbet pink and orange satin, high-waisted bell bottoms and wide bring straw hats – there really is no misplacing this look.
So basically those that follow the cutting-edge of fashion (I try, I really do. Please don’t judge me by the flannel cat pajamas and one sock that I’m rockin’ right now. Yes. I’m aware that it’s 3pm – thank you.) can start rocking the 70’s look as early as Spring and can be fully immersed in the spirit of disco-balls and decadence by early September.
Let’s eyeball a few of the Pre-Fall designers that Thakoon, Eli Tahari, Tory Burch, Nicole Miller, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta – the list is long and exhausting – are unleashing upon us unsuspecting (come on… we suspected.) fashionistas.

Riddle me this? What’s fitted in the waist and shoots down to just below the knee in two ‘A’ like lines for either a tailored pleated-at-the-top effect or a flowing spin-around-‘til-your-dizzy ballerina skirt look and might live in your Mom’s closet? (Mom – please be expecting a call.) It’s the A-line skirt – and it’s ba-a-a-ck.
Side Note: And, hey… check out Max Azria’s use of the turban. Look familiar?

Some of you ladies may breathe a sigh of relief at this news that now may be the time to officially retire your skinny leg pants. I - for one - was a skinny-leg late bloomer and just recently embraced them – so I may need a cocktail to digest this: The Wide Leg Pant is back. Think small at the top and big, big, big (some would even say slouchy – as in Ports 1961 offerings) at the bottom.

All right… to be fair… this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the resurgence of the maxi-length on dresses, coats and skirts. But how ‘bout the return of the maxi-length mu-mu! Take that nay-sayers! It IS a new trend! Ha! And perfect for hiding that afternoon celebration of National Cheeseburger Day whenever I damned well please! (I’ll take two, please.)
'til Next Time!
